Illustrators’ and writers’ encounter at Arteleku: a re-evaluation of the Traditional Basque Tale and self-publishing.

WHEN AND WHERE:

4th and 5th November 2010, mornings and afternoons, in Arteleku.

WHAT:

5 traditional Basque tales will be re-evaluated, with the writers adapting them afresh and the illustrators representing them. They will work in collaboration throughout the whole process. The technique and format are open, bearing in mind that we will be working in the field of self-publishing. Following the workshop, a deadline will be established for the book to be finished. During the workshop the participants will discover the process of self-publishing, from the start of the tale to its publication and distribution.

TEACHERS:

Harkaitz Cano, writer and scriptwriter
Ignasi Blanch Gisbert, illustrator and teacher of illustration

METHODOLOGY:

The couples selected (writer + illustrator) will learn beforehand the traditional Basque tale that they have been assigned to work on and they will have to make a draft of several chapters before the encounter. The encounter will run for two days. Each day will last for eight hours. On the first day there will be an introduction to self-publishing and from this point onwards each pair will work on their project, with the assistance of the teachers.

Following the workshop, a deadline will be given for each pair to finish their book.

FOR WHO:

5 illustrators and 5 writers, working in pairs, each illustrator with one writer. It is not necessary for these to apply to the encounter as a couple. However, if they apply individually, they will be assigned a workmate, chosen by the teachers.

General terms and conditions for participation:

- At least one of the members of each pair must be Basque.

- At least one of the members of each pair must be a member of Galtzagorri Elkartea.

- In the case of the illustrators, membership of the Professional Association of Basque Illustrators will be taken into account.

- Members of Galtzagorri must have published at least three books.

- Non-members of Galtzagorri must have published at least five books.

OFFER:

Free training is offered to the 10 participants chosen by the jury.

Each one will therefore enjoy a grant to receive two days’ training and for the assistance needed to carry out the work.

REGISTRATION:

- In the case of illustrators, they should submit 6 illustrations, published or otherwise, and, should they have one, the address of their website or blog.
