This installation makes part of VIDEO-CREATION & FASHION, programme tackling the process of reflection, creation and dissemination of artistic projects intertwining video-creation and fashion. The programme, organized by Colectivo YOX with the collaboration of Arteleku arts centre encompasses a workshop and exhibition and communication actions.

Zuhar Iruretagoiena, José Morraja and Sergio Ojeda, artists working in diverse media such as audiovisual, installation and photography were selected to participate in this programme so as to conceive, produce and disseminate video-creations associated to fashion works by the artist and fashion designer Ixone Elzo. The workshop was held at Arteleku arts centre on November 2012 counting with the orientation of the film-maker, professor and curator Kathryn Ferguson during the research and shooting process of the projects. More information about the workshop.

The projects of Zuhar Iruretagoiena “tensión, carga, descarga, relajación”, José Morraja “#” and Sergio Ojeda “II. Before I Kill you”, where conceived considering aesthetic and conceptual aspects of fashion works by Ixone Elzo, allowing the level of discourses’ confluence to the authors. The fashion works are part of three different collections: “Cabeza de Jabalí”, “Trucha con lentejas” and “Carne fresca” which stress the conceptual component of Ixone Elzo´s projects.

The three projects counted with the interventions of Beñat Urrutiabizkaia and Emmanuel Dobby (dancers at Dantzaz Dance Company) who wore the fashion creations interpreting the expression coordinates of the projects as dancers, models and actors.

After the workshop and as part of the process that will end in the exhibition and dissemination of the final versions of the projects, Iruretagoiena, Morraja and Ojeda have created test versions specifically articulated to be presented in the context of this installation.

The relevance of this installation and the programme hosting it lay in the prominent emergence of practices converging visual arts and fashion. During the last decades contemporary art explores possible synergies with other fields of experience: philosophy, politics, literature, design, communication… In the case of arts and fashion, their confluence is reinforced by their shared ability to be articulated as a language and a material and symbolic tool.

The encounter of the audiovisual and fashion, inaugurated with the beginning of cinema has go through a number of film, video and digital forms and media. It became related to video art at the beginning of this century and created a new and multiform audiovisual fashion genre called Fashion Film.

Colectivo YOX has curated and organized exhibition programmes around Fashion Film since 2005 at venues such as: CICC-Tabakalera, Arteleku, KM kulturunea, Guggenheim Bilbao Museum, Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum.  It is mainly focused on the artistic modality of Fashion Film which researches and experiments new models of sense production through the interaction of video-creation and fashion.
